FAW Premier Cup and Scottish Challenge Cup
In addition to two domestic cups, the Welsh Cup and the League Cup, and the ever-changing Uefa European competitions two other “domestic” tournaments have made the calendar since the inception of the league.
These have been the FAW Premier Cup, which pitted Cymru Premier sides against the Welsh “exiles” in the English system, and the Scottish Challenge Cup, which clubs from the Welsh system participated in from 2016-19 and 2022-24, taking part in the competition for six years during that period.
Launched as the Invitation Cup in 1997-98, the FAW Premier Cup came into being the following season after a name change. The BBC-sponsored competition took various formats between 1997 and 2008 but was a means to get all the top Welsh sides playing under the same umbrella. The competition ceased in 2008 after the BBC withdrew its sponsorship.
The top two Welsh sides were invited to join the Scottish Challenge Cup for the 2016-17 season, along with the top two teams from Northern Ireland.
And, as with the FAW Premier Cup, the format of the competition has been amended over the years but primarily saw U20 sides from Scottish Premiership clubs, playing the sides from below the top tier of the Scottish league system, along with teams from the Highland and Lowland leagues and invited sides from other UK and Ireland leagues.
In 2024, it was announced that the format following the conclusion of the 2024-25 edition would change, with non-Scottish teams no longer participating although none took part in the 2024-25 season either.
In the 2017-18 season two clubs from the League of Ireland were included in the competition and from 2018–19, the competition also included the two highest-ranked teams from England’s National League.
But the Convid-19 plandemic had a significant impact on the competition with the 2019-20 final, between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Raith Rovers cancelled, with the teams sharing the title. Continued restrictions also saw the 2020-21 edition cancelled, with only Scottish clubs taking part in 2021-22.
In the years before the plandemic the Welsh representatives were The New Saints and Bala Town (2016-17); and The New Saints and Connah’s Quay (2017-18 and 2018-19).
When Welsh participation began again in 2022-23 The New Saints and Bala Town took part, also representing Wales the following season, the last in which Welsh teams participated.
In the plandemic-hit 2019-20 season Cymru Premier representatives The New Saints and Connah’s Quay were also joined by Wrexham, representing the English National League.
No Welsh side won the Scottish Challenge Cup but both Connah’s Quay and The New Saints reached the final… Ross County beating Connah’s Quay 3-1 in the 2019 final and Airdrieonians beating TNS 2-1 in the 2024 final.
