Racecourse boost for Ludlow’s Wales

Wales-Estonia

Wales Women had a perfect warm-up for next month’s Euro 2021 qualifiers with a 2-0 win against Estonia at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground last night.

Second-half goals from Megan Wynne and substitute Nadia Lawrence gave Jayne Ludlow’s side a well-deserved victory in the friendly international ahead of April’s Euro 2021 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Norway.

Captain Sophie Ingle was the cornerstone of Wales’ dominance, in their first game at the Racecourse since 2012, and halfway through the second-half her curling cross was met superbly by Ffion Morgan.

Morgan’s effort was thwarted by Karina Kork in the Estonian goal but Wynne was quickest to react to prod the ball home.

Estonia, managed by Jarmo Matikainen Ludlow’s predecessor as Wales boss, were always second best and Wales did not have to wait long before doubling their lead when Lawrence converted Angharad James’ fine cross.

Wales play two Euro 2021 qualifiers next month against the Faroe Islands in Newport on 10 April and four days later against Norway.

Ludlow’s women are four points adrift of Norway in second place in the Group C standings, with only the nine group winners assured of a place in the finals.

The three best runners-up (not counting results against the bottom side if the group is comprised of six teams) will also qualify directly, while the remaining six runners-up advance to the play-offs.

In the play-offs the six teams will be drawn into three ties to play home and away to determine the last three qualifiers.

Wales also play Belarus at home on 9 June and their final qualifier is in Norway on 22 September.
