They may not match Barcelona, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich or Manchester United on the playing surface but Fotballaget Fart, Go Ahead Eagles, KFC Winterslag and Sportclub Feucht are names you don't easily forget for slightly different reasons.
There are probably teams with stranger names around the world but those four are among Europe's quirkiest, but there are also a few in Wales we think could compete on that front.
Fotballaget Fart are a Norwegian club based in Vang in the north of the country and play at the Fartbana. Their name comes from the Norwegian for speed and their women's team come with more of a reputation than the men.
Go Ahead Eagles are a Dutch side where Leo Beenhakker cut his managerial teeth, the Deventer-based side were originally called Be Quick, but changed their name at the request of the Dutch FA to Go Ahead. The suffix Eagles was added in 1971 at the suggestion of their Welsh-born manager Barry Hughes.
Then there's Sportclub Feucht, think it's pronounced differently in Germany! The Bavarian club are no giants by any definition, the 90-year-old side has never been beyond the third tier of German football and now inhabit much lower echelons of the German game.
And then there's KFC Winterslag, Belgium's contribution to the list. Known these days as Racing Genk, following the merger of Winterslag and Waterschei Thor in 1988, they are a fixture in the Jupiler league, the top flight of Belgian football. Winterslag’s highest ever finish was fifth place in the Jupiler, but in their Genk incarnation they have won the league twice, and the domestic cup on three occasions. They qualified for the 2002-03 Champions League group stage, and despite finishing bottom, managed a goalless draw at home to Real Madrid.
So can Wales compete on the name front, well we've found 11 teams who we think are more than a match.
First up we have Lex XI, mainly because they've also recently undergone a name change to Lex Glyndwr. Lex play in division one of the Welsh National League but seem to have lost a little stature since changing their name. Lex XI had much more of a ring to it.
Sportclub Feucht give the impression of being a team not be messed with, but South Wales Alliance division one side Fochriw probably wouldn't be fazed. Nothing clever in the name, it's just what the village is called... but you wouldn't want to be messing with them. If you want a name with attitude... they don't come much better.
AFC Poets on the other hand are not a team likely to fill opponents with dread, at least as long as they don't start muttering Kipling or Tennyson during the game. The Poets play in the same league as Space Jam Galaxy, now that's definitely up there with Go Ahead Eagles, although Hughes played no part in the Lazarou Sunday League side's name.
Galaxy, who were formed in 2012, play their home games at Cath Cobb Fields in the St Mellons district of Cardiff and are currently in division two, along with AFC Poets, two divisions below Roman Villains, who are in the Premier Division. Now that's a fine name, not sure if the founders were from Birmingham but we're guessing Brian Little could be one of their football heroes. But even if he's not we still like the name.
Our favourite team in the Vale of Glamorgan League is Knap. We believe the division one side like to put their feet up at half-time and have a tendency to drift out of the game for short periods. They undoubtedly have a totally different philosophy to Pembrokeshire League division one side Hakin United, who could have a bit of a reputation for football's darker arts, even though they can't help where they come from.
Our final destination is the Bridgend and District Sunday Football League, which offers four pretty good candidates for Wales' quirkiest name and our personal favourite. Competing alongside Rage FFC, Walnut Wildcats and Wicked FC are Garth Vader, which has to be one of the best names on the planet. It would take a good five years of back-to-back promotions for Vadar to get into Europe, but if they did they'd strike fear throughout the continent. May the force be with them!
