Welsh rivals to clash in Carabao opener

Carabao Cup

Newport County host Swansea City in the first round of this season’s League Cup, sponsored by Carabao, with Cardiff City taking on Northampton Town.

The mouthwatering prospect of an all-Welsh derby in the first round takes place on 5 September, with Mike Flynn’s League Two side welcoming the Swans to Rodney Parade.

The last time the two Welsh clubs played against each other in a competitive tie was in the 2006 FA Cup when Lee Trundle, Ezy Iriekpen and Leon Britton scored in a 3-1 win for the Swans.

The Bluebirds travel to Northampton to face the League One outfit, who beat Cardiff 2-1 in the tournament in 2012… although they went on to win the Championship.

Cardiff are currently 100/1 to lift the trophy, with Swansea available at 125/1 with Betway and the Exiles at 2,500/1 with SkyBet.

The EFL have confirmed there will be a number of significant scheduling changes to this season’s competition, with two-legged semi-finals scrapped in favour of a single tie.

The first four rounds are also scheduled to take place on consecutive weeks, with round one taking place on Saturday, 5 September, although since this falls on an international weekend ties may be changed to alternative dates. Some ties could be held later this month.

The EFL have also confirmed rounds two, three and four will be played on consecutive midweek dates, starting on either 15-16 September.

Premier League sides will enter the competition in round two or round three if they are competing in a European competition.

Meanwhile, in the FA Cup, replays have been scrapped for the 2020-21 season, with the move being an attempt to ease fixture congestion in what is set to be a condensed season due to the coronavirus shutdown.

This means matches that end in a draw will now go to extra-time and penalties.

The schedule for the 2020-21 FA Cup will start with an extra preliminary round on 1 September, with the final being held on 15 May 2021.
