Crows dreaming of former glories in Welsh Cup

Tredegar Cwmbran

The 131st season of the Welsh Cup gets underway in a fortnight with action in the first qualifying round taking place over the weekend of 1-2 September.

With a place in the Europa League preliminary round the goal, three-times runners-up Cwmbran Town travel to Tredegar Town dreaming of a return to former glories having earned a tie against Maccabi Haifa of Israel after reaching the final in 2003, when they lost on penalties to Welsh Premier champions Barry Town who qualified for the Champions League.

The Crows, also beaten finalists in 1997 and 2000, enter at the first stage having dropped down the tiers of Welsh football to the Gwent County League, while Barry and last year’s winners Connah’s Quay make their entrance into the competition in the third round, by which time Cwmbran would have to have won four ties to still be in the competition.

Last year the Crows lost 7-1 at home to Aberbargoed Buds in the second qualifying round, having beaten Caerleon 3-1 in the first qualifying round.

Connah’s Quay lifted the trophy for the first time, beating Aberystwyth Town 4-1 in the final at Latham Park, Newtown.

Six-times winners Barry Town went down 2-0 to Caernarfon Town after entering in the third round last season.
