Cwmbran progress after penalty thriller

Tredegar Cwmbran

The Welsh Cup saw the start of its 131st season at the weekend when the first qualifying round produced plenty of thrilling action.

The northern section produced just one shootout, with Pwllheli beating Llannefydd 4-1 on penalties after the sides drew 3-3. In the south three-times runners-up Cwmbran Town edged a close encounter against Tredegar Town, winning their shootout 7-6 after the sides had also drawn 3-3.

Pwllheli’s reward is a second qualifying round tie at Prestatyn Sports, while Cwmbran will host Newport Civil Service in the next round.

Merthyr Saints and Treowen Stars drew 2-2, with the Saints edging the penalty shootout 6-5, and the match between Blaenrhondda and Penrhiwceiber Rangers also finished 2-2, with Blaenrhondda going through 7-6 on pens. In the next round Blaenrhondda travel to AFC Llwydcoed, while Merthyr Saints are away to Caldicot Town.

But the most gripping contest was between Caerau and Pontyclun which finished 1-1, the away side getting the better of a tense shootout which finished 10-9 to the visitors. Pontyclun’s reward is another away trip to Cefn Cribwr in the next round.

A total of 96 teams take part in the second qualifying round, 46 winners from the previous round and 50 teams coming into the competition at this stage. Ties will be played on Saturday, 29 September 2018.
