Tier 3 goes regional in league revamp

Football Wales

Following last year’s restructuring of the top two tiers of Welsh football into the Cymru Leagues, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) has unveiled its plans for tier three, the second instalment of its review of the Welsh pyramid announced two years ago.

The FAW’s National Leagues Board (NLB) confirmed 64 clubs will compete at the Tier 3 level of the pyramid from the start of the 2020-21 season, although the name and new brand of the Tier 3 structure has not yet been disclosed.

In all 84 clubs were successful in attaining Tier 3 certification, with six of those promoted to Tier 2, including Holyhead Hotspur, Holywell Town, Llanidloes Town, Port Talbot Town, Risca United and Trefelin BGC.

One of the key objectives of the FAW pyramid review was to provide two predominantly northern leagues and two southern leagues within the Tier 3 structure, while the NLB also considered pyramid regulations, geographical location and sporting merit in drawing up the new leagues.

There will be 64 clubs competing in the inaugural leagues from the start of the 2020-21 season, split into four regional entities each comprised of 16 teams (listed below).

Corwen and Llanfair United, who were relegated from the Cymru North, will line up in the North East league, will Porthmadog drop into the North West division. Llanidloes Town, Holyhead Hotspur and Holywell Town make the jump up to the Cymru North.

Port Talbot, Risca and Trefelin make the jump up to the Cymru South, with STM Sports, Cwmamman United and Caerau (Ely) all slipping into the South West league.
