Venables leads Cymru Premier goal race

Cymru Premier

Two former Golden Boot winners are battling it out once again to be the Cymru Premier’s top goalscorer for the 2019-20 season.

The race is currently headed by Bala Town’s Chris Venables on 21 goals, 18 in the first phase of the season but crucially three so far in the second phase.

At the end of the first part of the campaign, before the split into the championship and play-off conferences, Venables was level with TNS marksman Greg Draper, but since then the New Zealander has failed to find the net leaving the Bala ace out in front.

As an Aberystwyth Town player Venables topped the goal-scoring charts from 2014-16, notching up 28 goals in 2015.

Newtown’s Jason Oswell took over in 2017 with 22 goals before Draper came to the fore in the last two Cymru Premier campaigns, almost matching Venables’ best tally last year when he grabbed 27 goals.

Connah’s Quay striker Jamie Insall and Barry Town’s Kayne McLaggon are tied in third place on 13 goals, both also failing to hit the net since the split.

Leading the way in the second phase of the season with four goals, one more than Venables, is Aberystwyth’s Spanish hitman Alhagi Touray Sisay.
